Make Your Own Plant Markers

I've had all sorts of herb markers over the years and one by one, they've disappeared.  I guess I'll find them one of these days in the soil or under mulch.  I decided that it would be fun to make my own markers.

To make the markers I used roof flashing left over from a long ago craft project.  I traced circles on the flashing and cut them out with tin snips.  If you want more uniform circles, you could do this with a drill press.

Place a circle on a block of wood and use a metal stamp kit to write whatever plant name you'd like to mark.  I found that using a hammer worked better than using the tool that came with the kit to add each letter.  The tool that came with the kit didn't put the letter as deep into the metal as I wanted.

Use an awl to make a hole in the top of the marker.

I used 14 gauge multipurpose galvanized utility wire to make holders for the markers. 

Here's a few of the tags that I made.  I even wrapped up a set as a gift for a gardening friend at school.

These silver circles are functional and I think look nice, too.
