I've had all sorts of herb markers over the years and one by one, they've disappeared. I guess I'll find them one of these days in the soil or under mulch. I decided that it would be fun to make my own markers.
Wanna see?
To make the markers I used roof flashing left over from a long ago craft project. I traced circles on the flashing and cut them out with tin snips. If you want more uniform circles, you could do this with a drill press.
Place a circle on a block of wood and use a metal stamp kit to write whatever plant name you'd like to mark. I found that using a hammer worked better than using the tool that came with the kit to add each letter. The tool that came with the kit didn't put the letter as deep into the metal as I wanted.
Use an awl to make a hole in the top of the marker.
I used 14 gauge multipurpose galvanized utility wire to make holders for the markers.
Here's a few of the tags that I made. I even wrapped up a set as a gift for a gardening friend at school.
These silver circles are functional and I think look nice, too.
Thank you for this perfect idea, I have been needing a way to tag my roses.

Love this project idea... thanks for the tips!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! Your instructions are spot on.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! Where did you get your stamp set? And I have to ask, did it tear up your fingers?
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! Carla
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing a great idea. I ordered metal markers from a garden supply catalog but they came with a marker somewhat like a sharpie and the ink fades in the sun. Now I can stamp them like yours and they will last forever! Please tell us where to get the stamps!
ReplyDeleteThose look great! Where did you find a metal stamp kit? Michaels or Hobby Lobby or someplace similar??

Those are sooo cute! You are so smart. I bet your friend will love them too. I might have to get a stamp kit and try my hand at jewelry.
ReplyDeleteAHHHHHHHH I love, LOVE LOVE THESE! You're so creative :)
ReplyDeleteI think those plant markers are super and they will weather beautifully. I don't have any of the tools needed to make them but I'm wondering if you couldn't sell them as sets. I'd certainly love to have/give a set as a hostess gift. Jane F.

Those are really neat, Paula!!!
ReplyDeletePaula they are really neat and useful. I like them! :)
ReplyDeleteI found a set of letter stamps when cleaning in the garage this summer. I don't know if they were my husband's or if his uncle gave them to him. I will try them out on a project like yours, but I'll use the metal juice lids I save from 12 ounce frozen juice containers. I have LOTS as I use them at school for Christmas tin punch ornaments. Thanks for sharing! ♥♫
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing! I've been wanting to make something like this ALL summer!
